Parents vs Bladez - The Battle of 2009

Come one, come all to the epic battle that will determine who reigns supreme....

Parents vs Bladez - The Battle of 2009

When: Saturday 12th December, 2009 from 1:15pm
(please arrive early so we can start on time)

Where: ECU Gymnasium, Mt Lawley

Who: All Bladez parents, aunties, uncles, cousins, brothers and sisters.

How: We'll give all new-comers the basics of fencing,
then have "line games" to settle the score!

Light refreshments will be provided.

iFencing with FencingRef

There's a new app available for iPod/iPhone called FencingRef, and after seeing it for the first time in Perth last week, I decided to buy it and write up my own how-to.

Version 1.10 of FencingRef by Jakatai Inc. was tested on Apple iPod touch 2nd generation with OS 3.1.2.

You can choose to keep track of a pool, or just use Fencing Ref for a quick match

You can keep track of a pool that has already started, or start a new one.

You can enter between four and eight fencers in the pool.

Enter their full names.

A pool sheet is created and you can then click Fence to get the bout going.

The application allows you to keep score, keep time, penalise and add extra time.
Once the bout is over, you press Record to record the score on the pool sheet.

To check the order of the fencing, you can click on Bouts

The results are recorded and displayed on the pool sheet.

To get more information, press Scores

The buttons are big so you can't miss them, they are also colour coded red/green for stop/go.
Penalties can be awarded and you can hold the device up as it displays a yellow, red or black card. There is also an option for injury time, and a one minute break is no problem with the touch of a button.

This is a very simple application for iPhone/iPod. It allows the functionality of a full scoring system at the press of a few buttons, without the paperwork. It's a fantastic concept and is suited for general club refereeing or those on the go.

FencingRef is available via the iTunes Store for AUD 2.49

FIE News

At the recent FIE Congress meeting, the FIE executive committee announced that the Men's Team Epee and Women's Team Sabre events will be excluded from the 2012 Olympic Games.

In other votes, the city of Catania, Italy won the bid to host the 2011 senior world championships over Tianjin, China, and Budapest, Hungary. Various proposals that seemed design to add weight to European results were defeated.

The decision to remove Men's Epee and Women's Sabre from the Olympic events for London 2012 follows on the rotation of team events included in the Olympic Games. When women's sabre first became an Olympic event in 2004, the IOC refused to allocate additional medals for the fencing events, so the FIE compromised by agreeing to remove two (team) events with each rotation.

In 2004 Women's Team Sabre and Women's Team Foil were not contested and in 2008 Men's Team Foil and Women's Team Epee sat.

According to one attendee at the Congress, the FIE executive committee attempted to hold off on the announcement of which team events would be excluded until after the 2010 Junior World Championships "so that federation would not abandon budgets and training for this season in the removed weapons." This created quite a stir amongst the members of the Congress, so the FIE finally made the announcement.

Sam Cheris, one of the US delagates to the FIE congress confirmed the team event decision and noted that the proposals to weight points more for European zonals or to eliminate zonals were withdrawn.

Additionally the recent incident regarding the 'visor' mask is still under investigation and as such no additional action was taken by the FIE at the Congress.

There will be no formal intermediates class - instead, fencers will be encouraged to set up pistes and arrange bouts between themselves.

Sorry for the inconvenience, fencing times will return to normal for the remaining sessions in 2009 after the 5th.

Cavs Annual General Meeting

We had a successful meeting on Saturday, followed by a sausage sizzle attended by well over 30 people. Later in the evening, a small group met for drinks at The Queens.

During the meeting, we presented the Fencers Choice Awards. As the name suggests, these nominations come from the members themselves, (not the committee) so this is always a heartwarming time for our club. See Gillian for a list of awards.

The new committee for 2010 was elected as follows.

President - Gary Bates
Vice President - Mahmud Jaffar
Secretary - Gillian Kings-Lynne
Treasurer - Lachlan Martin
Coaching Coordinator - Mike Middleton
WAFA Representative - position vacant

Other committee positions are as follows.

Equipment Officer - Ian Walker
Tournament Officer - Alex Boujos
Bladez Coordinator - position vacant
Social Secretary - position vacant (some unconfirmed interest)
Promotions Manager - Maya Polanski
Librarian - Jason McNamara
Web Page Manager - Maya Polanski
ECU Guild Representative - Simon Macintyre

Anyone wishing to take on the job of WAFA Rep or Bladez Coordinator, please advise Gillian.
The role of Social Secretary has received interest from several different parties who do not wish to take it on alone. We are still open to offers for this job.

****************************************************

WAFA AGM and AWARDS PRESENTATION

This will be the next important item on the fencing agenda.

Saturday 21st November 5pm, followed by drinks and nibbles, at Claremont.

IMPORTANT - there are many positions vacant at WAFA. In particular, the role of Tournament Chairperson has been vacant for some time, with no sign of being filled. This is a job requiring full commitment. If you are interested, let me know straightaway.

There will be no WAFA comps next year if this position is not filled.

Notice of Annual General Meeting

NOTICE TO ALL MEMBERS

Annual General Meeting
Saturday 7th November, 2009 @ 3:30pm
ECU Gym, Mt Lawley

The fencing session will be held as usual until 3:30pm with the meeting between 3:30pm and 4:30pm.
Sausage Sizzle will follow from 5:00pm.

Cavaliers continues to be one of the best clubs in the State. The Club maintains a progressive outlook and strives to provide a friendly environment for both social and competitive fencers.

While the atmosphere of a comfortable social club remains the primary draw-card, we are pleased to say that our competitive spirit is picking up in both the junior and senior realms. This, alongside a concentration on coaching standards, is an area upon which we hope to build in 2010.

Of course, Cavaliers can only survive with willing support from within its own membership. We urge you to consider whether "now" is the right time for you to join our Administration Team and help keep Cavaliers as the greatest fencing club in Perth!

We hope as many of you as possible will make the time to attend the Annual General Meeting and stay on for the casual Sausage Sizzle.

US President Barack Obama Takes a Stab

US President Barack Obama staged a homecoming-style Olympic rally at the White House on Wednesday, saying the whole country is cheering for his hometown of Chicago in its efforts to host the 2016 Summer Olympic Games.

First Lady Michelle Obama commented, "You should have seen the president in there fencing," she said to laughter, as Obama stuck out his arm in a mock fencing move. "It was pathetic. But he passed the baton really well."

Over at the fencing demonstration, President Obama picked up a foam sword and playfully demonstrated the skill that his wife had joked about.

Oceania Seniors Championships - Postponed

The New Caledonian Fencing League (NCFL) has advised that it has decided to postpone the Oceania Senior Championships to 5th - 7th November 2009.

The NCFL had planned the Oceania Senior Championships as a stand alone event. As such, it was expecting considerably more entries to make the event financially viable and to showcase the event to its sponsors and local dignitaries.

The NCFL has decided to re-schedule the Oceania Senior Championships for 5 to 7 November 2009 so that they can be held alongside the New Caledonian Open Championships.

The AFF will soon re-issue a formal call for entries for these Championships.

New Leaders Required

With Andy Martin leaving the club very soon, Cavs is looking forward to some exciting changes in the area of coaching over the next few weeks.

At the same time, we are looking for some new faces in leadership roles.
________________________________________
BLADEZ CO-ORDINATOR REQUIRED
This position requires a person who is reliable, willing to communicate frequently with the Committee, and happy to have a long-term commitment to the club.
________________________________________

We are looking for someone to take on the responsibility of the Bladez Group - someone who finds that time-slot convenient, someone who loves the children and who is interested in developing a program which fits in with Cavs 'easy going' style, yet making sure the children's interest is maintained, and that the correct fencing procedures are taught.

Bladez operates between 1.15pm and 2.30pm on Saturdays during school terms.

We are fortunate to have several really wonderful and enthusiastic volunteer coaches already working in the Bladez team.

The Bladez Co-ordinator would be required to care for and co-ordinate the Bladez coaches and be responsible for the coaching program.

He/She would be required to deal with disciplinary problems with some of the young fencers as they arise. In the past, this has been done mainly by encouragement to the child to concentrate and continue to join in, but on the odd occasion it has been necessary to approach parents if the problems continue.

He/She would be required to look out for the older children who are ready to move up to the main group and to help ease them through that transition by working with the Intermediate coach.

He/She would be required to make sure that Bladez fencers are aware of the WAFA competitions, to encourage participation in those competitions, and to work with the Cavs Tournament Officer in making sure the children are confident in knowing how to enter the competitions.

He/She would need to keep track of the occasional roll call and see that newcomers are referred to the Secretary to be properly enrolled.

He/She would be required to work with the Cavs Coaching Co-ordinator (Overall), reporting on any problems which may need to be discussed by the Committee - eg coaching shortage, etc.

He/She would work with the Secretary and parents to organise a few social occasions such as visits to other clubs (Icecream Day), Parents Have-a-Go Day, etc.

This position would not require a great deal of time out of session time.

Please RSVP to Gillian if you are interested.

________________________________________
CAVS COACHING CO-ORDINATOR (OVERALL) REQUIRED

This position requires a person who is reliable, willing to communicate frequently with the Committee, and happy to have a long-term commitment to the club.
________________________________________

While we have already received a serious expression of interest for this position, I am sending this around for your information.

For many years, Mahmud Jaffar has been the Head Coach or, as the position is now called, Coaching Co-ordinator.

Mahmud wishes to retire from that position, so we are looking for a permanent replacement.

The Coaching Coordinator is responsible for co-ordination of all coaching programs within the Club.

He/She oversees the smooth running of the Bladez, the Beginners' Courses, the Intermediates, the Militia.

He/She is responsible for the rostering of coaches to all groups, and for the standards of coaching practised.

He/She would join with the Committee in decisions involving the employment of professional coaches, and the conditions under which they are employed.

He/She oversees the acquiring of qualifications for new coaches, and the updating of continuing coaches' accreditation.

While this position does not necessarily require a high level of coaching expertise, it would help to have had some experience. You would need to know your coaches, keep them informed, plan their rosters (eg for Beginners'), keep records of qualifications, ensure that qualifications are renewed, etc.

You would be on the Executive Committee and be required to attend Committee meetings quarterly.

The Committee operates through frequent email communication.

Please RSVP to Gillian if you are interested.
This position will be formally voted in at the November AGM.

Many thanks, Cavs Committee.

See you and your family at the YMCA International Fencing Cup 2009!

Cavs Intermediate Group

Since Mal Davies left, the Intermediate Group has been coached by Andy Martin who will be with us until the 16th, possibly the 19th of September.

After that, we must look for a new permanent coach.

Before looking further, we are asking Cavs fencers if there is any interest amongst our own membership in taking on this task.

Perhaps either one person willing to take it on completely, or a few people helping to form a coaching team, eg: a small group of senior fencers willing to share the hours and to contribute, work together and agree on a suitable coaching program to cover the three weapons.

This, at least, may serve the purpose until such time as a suitable coach can be found.

Please RSVP to Gillian or a committee member at a session if you are interested.

Farewell BBQ for Andy

Saturday 5th September - 5pm onwards

Andy will be leaving Perth on the 19th of September to return home. As time is running short, we have arranged a casual BBQ at Mahmud's home after fencing on this Saturday 5th to give our fencers a chance to say goodbye. There is no problem if people wish to go over to Mahmud's early after fencing at 5pm. Families are most welcome.

If we get a good idea of numbers, we will provide plenty of sausages and bread rolls. If you wish to eat anything other than sausages, BYO.
It would be great if we received donations of salads/desserts.

We will have some soft drinks available, but anything else BYO. Mahmud will provide tea/coffee.

Please RSVP to Gillian if you wish to attend, so that we can cater.

FAREWELL TO PELLA AND JOEY

2009 Oceania Seniors Championships

New Caledonia has advised that it will host these Championships in Noumea from 17th to 19th September.

The AFF recommends this tournament to all those wanting to take a step up from national level competition to experience competing for Australia as part of an Australian Team at an international tournament in an overseas country. It is a good competition in which to make the transition to international competition as it will be held in a nearby country that is a tropical island paradise with a French cultural influence. Senior, veterans and older young (17 years +) fencers will find this a worthwhile and enjoyable competition experience.

There is no limit on the number of fencers able to compete in the individual events. Team events will also be held. Following is the advised competition timetable:

Thursday 17 September
Men’s Sabre, Women’s Sabre
Team events will follow individual finals.

Friday 18 September
Men’s Foil, Women’s Foil
Team events will follow individual finals.

Saturday 19 September
Men’s Epee, Women’s Epee
Team events will follow individual finals.

Further information can be found on the AFF website.

Blaise Goes Wild in Brisbane!

One of our Cavs fencers, Blaise was seen (and heard) expressing his extreme delight at taking the winning hit against the New Zealand Cadets Epee team in Brisbane last week.

The result qualified them a place in the final but they had to be content with second place after losing to the NSW state team 45 - 37. But still, it was a fantastic effort by the team, well done to you all.

We're surprised we didn't hear him from here!

Thanks to Ian (another proud Cavs dad) for the photo and the story.

The Activity Weekend - A Roaring Success!

Sincere thanks from the Cavs Committee to all those volunteers from Cavs who turned up on the weekend to help out with the Junior Competitions on the Activity Days. It was truly a superb effort and, in Gary's words, you're the STARS!

Saturday was one of the most successful fencing days ever seen at Cavs with an estimate of at least one hundred fencers on the floor. It was Gary who carried the day with his wonderful team working flat out, and Mahmud, taking the very young ones under his wing, who kept the pace up. George was kept constantly busy with his equipment repair workshop and museum. Gillian, with the help of Lynne, ran a very successful refreshments bar.

Our thanks to all our visitors for turning up and making this a special day. Thanks to the parents of our fencers who helped run the comps, and to those fencers and parents from other clubs who contributed so wholeheartedly.

Sunday was much quieter, but equally busy for those who were there to help out.

WAFA Activity Day - Hosted by Cavs

The WAFA Activity Weekend will be hosted by Cavs the 4th and 5th of July 2009.

Please mark this on your calendar!

Cavs is hosting an Activity Weekend which will include our usual session times on Saturday and an extra program on Sunday.

The main focal point will be the Junior Competitions. Other activities will be fitted in around these comps to give fencers from visiting clubs an opportunity to mix and meet.

Cavs fencers will need to ensure that visitors are made to feel welcome and included.

We are compiling a list of volunteers to help out with DT Team duties for the comps, and with the other activities.

This is also a good time for Juniors wishing to try a competition for the first time. You can test your skills on familiar territory. If you are not sure of the procedure of entering a comp, please ask your coach, or ask our Tournament Officer, Alex Boujos, who is there to help you.

The program is attached, click to view a larger image.

Please note that there will be an Equipment Workshop with George on both days.
Parents may be interested in this.

Andy Martin - Visiting International Coach

ANDY MARTIN, a highly qualified coach from the UK will visit Cavs on Wednesday night to meet club committee and members.

It is hoped that Andy will be able to make it to the club each Wednesday session, and some of the Saturday sessions over the next three months.

Andy is primarily a Foil Coach, but also coaches Epee. Unfortunately, he does not coach Sabre.

There is an opportunity for Cavs fencers to take individual lessons with Andy.
A set of ten lessons will cost $220. Some people may like to share a set of lessons, ie 5 each.

Expressions of Interest:
To get an indication of how many Cavs fencers would like to commit to this arrangement, could you please reply by email to Gillian , or let her know on Wednesday night, so that we can decide on an appropriate roster for Andy as soon as possible.

We are hoping to use the Saturday sessions as well, however the visits will be broken by such events as the Brisbane Comp, an Albany weekend, etc.

Study on Fencing Injuries at International Competitions

If you think fencing is dangerous, think again!

A study completed this month by Doctors in Spain on injury patterns in World Championship and Olympic fencing competitions has proven that fencing is a safe sport, despite its armed combat. Of course, protective gear must always worn!

The most common injuries are ankle sprains and lower back pain, all of which can be prevented with strengthening and flexibility exercises.

Read the presentation here.
