Bladez Icecream Day
A resounding success!!
About 20 young fencers visited our Bladez group last Saturday for a day of games and fun followed by an icecream. Many parents, who accompanied the children enjoyed a cup of tea and cake - and the left-over icecream!
Many thanks to the extra team of coaches and assistants who helped Mahmud out on the day.
We couldn't have done it without you.
Many thanks to Dave Cross from the UWA Club, who did all the groundwork in getting so many fencers over to our club.
Many thanks to the young UWA fencers for coming along (at a different time-slot for them) and making the day such a success.
Many thanks to our Bladez who welcomed the new fencers and enjoyed the inter-club activities.
All agreed that we should do this again next year. Great stuff.

Positions Vacant for 2009
The following positions are still vacant!
WAFA TREASURER - position required for the WAFA Committee. This would be a responsible position and take time. Needs someone who is reliable and OK with MYOB. I am sure most of the work could be done at home. WAFA will hold a meeting on Thursday 4th December, so if anyone is interested from our Club, it would be great if you could let us know by then.
WAFA REPRESENTATIVE FOR CAVALIERS - this is a position which would require attending meetings during the year and reporting back to the club on various policies and programs. Also to present Cavs views at the meetings and vote on our behalf. Having a strong relationship with WAFA is paramount to the progress of our fencers. Anyone who is interested is welcome to contact Gillian with any questions.

Club Activity Days - a proposed WAFA plan for 2009
WE NEED YOUR INPUT!
It is proposed that WAFA holds three Activity Days during the year - draft plan pin points the weekend prior to each school holiday.
All Clubs would close down for a session and meet at one large venue for a day/weekend of combined club fencing, various activities, for all age groups.
WAFA requires feedback from our Club as to the viability, or consensus, of such a day.
Do you think it is a good idea?
Would you like to meet up with other clubs a couple of times per year?

Please feel free to add your own comments by return email to Gillian so that a club consensus can be put together for our response to WAFA.
Thoughts Positive:
It is a good, or interesting, idea in principle (but how to make it work in practice)
A wider choice of fencing partners - good for clubs to get to know each other.
Opportunity to organise interclub teams
Must be casual, fun, not formal competition, free social fencing for those who want it, fun comps or team events for those who want it.
Shifting equipment would be hard work, but possible
Note that:
ECU Cavs venue available only on Saturdays/Sundays during School Holidays with advance booking, so we could not hold it at Cavs venue at proposed time. Court Hire fees plus wages for attendant required.
Thoughts Negative:
Definitely not two days over the weekend - too long. Saturday half day would be enough
Don't need three times per year especially if there is an AFF comp in Perth, maybe two.
Many fencers fear it would be too much like a competition.
Beginner and Intermediates intimidated by the idea of competition - definitely requires a fun component.
Reluctant to close clubs for the day.
Not sure that many people would attend group day.
Organisation - how would WAFA organise such a huge event, given the past history of running comps?
Very heavy work load on the club volunteers.
Is it going to require too much work to organise, shift equipment, run groups.
Does it mean that helpers doing the organising and officiating can't get to fence?
Logistical problems in moving club equipment to the chosen venue.

Foil Masks with Conductive Bibs
FOIL MASKS WITH CONDUCTIVE BIBS
(see note for Australian tournaments)
(This does not apply to local WA tournaments)
In an AFF Email Circular on 25th September, the AFF advised of the FIE's mandatory requirements for new foil masks with a conductive bib for all FIE senior events from 1 January 2009.
The circular went on to state that the 2008 AFF Annual General Meeting (AGM) agreed to introduce this FIE requirement for fully conductive bibs on mask foils for all national tournaments (for all age groups) in Australia from 1 January 2009.
The statement was meant to convey that the AFF AGM decision was the requirement for the conductive bib, as per Part XXII of the attached FIE Circular, and not the requirement for the new complete foil masks.
Consequently, from 1 January 2009, for all AFF national foil tournaments for all age groups, the requirement will be to have a mask with the conductive bib.
The AFF understands that some international manufacturers, as well as some local Australian suppliers, are making available kits to adapt the bibs on existing foil masks.
For those needing to purchase the new foil masks for their intended participation in FIE senior events, the FIE has recently posted on its website (on the page) the list of approved manufacturers of these new foil masks.

NEW FIE (Federation Internationale d'Escrime) LICENSE FEE
(This is for fencers in International Competition)
Following a review of the current international currency exchange rates, the AFF has increased the fee for obtaining an FIE license. This is the first increase in approximately 5 years.
The new fee, effective immediately, is A$60.
The form on the AFF website has been updated accordingly.
FIE licenses will only be purchased by the AFF on submission of the completed form and payment made either by cheque or bank transfer.
